NEW YEAR HOLIDAY

Almost everyone in the United States celebrates New Year's Eve as a holiday that brings in the new year. As the stroke of midnight travels from the East to West coast, on New Year's Eve, friends and family join together to remember the past year, and to celebrate and look forward to a new year. It is said that "New Year's Eve is the holiday that celebrates future holidays!"

An art theme, such as this water light show, can make a difference in any holiday celebration.

Art used to celebrate New Year's Eve typically has a winter theme and a bright cheerful outlook. Here, this artistic water fountain light show uses lights and water to celebrate the New Year's Eve holiday. A creative art theme can make a positive difference in any holiday celebration.
Some old New Year traditions include getting together with friends on the evening before the New Year, drinking champagne (if you can get a champagne cork to pop at exactly midnight, that's excellent), loudly counting down the last seconds of the year, kissing your spouse for good luck on the first second of the New Year, and shouting and making lots of noise the first few minutes of the New Year (The host at the party should make sure that there are plenty of brightly colored noise makers available).

During New Year eve celebrations, there is almost always singing involved -- especially the song "Auld Lang Syne".

Auld Lang Syne

On New Year's Eve, at the stroke of midnight, "Auld Lang Syne" is sang almost everywhere in the United States to bring in the New Year. Written during the 1700's, "Auld Lang Syne" means "ancient times" or "good old day". Here are the words to "Auld Lang Syne" ...

Should old acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and days of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?

And here's a hand, my trusted friend
And there's a hand o'thine
We'll take a cup o'kindness yet
For auld lang syne.

Any holiday party that uses artistic themes will be more enjoyable and memorable. New Year's celebrations are no exception and benefit greatly from the use of art and crafts. For example, the water fountain light show, shown above, is an outstanding example of how art can make a celebration stand out from the rest. Other ideas include a small automatic slide show of your year's photographs, commemorative hats, and brightly colored ribbons suspended across the ceiling. What about having special drink glasses for your guests to take home as a gift, perhaps engraved with "We'll take a cup o'kindness yet. For auld lang syne. 2007." What a difference small things like these can make to your new year's celebration!
